A planning tool that helps nonprofits make smart choices and develop high-impact communications, the Smart Chart™ was created by the Communications Leadership Institute (CLI) in conjunction with Spitfire Strategies, and is used by thousands of nonprofits and foundations to design and evaluate effective strategies. To date, more than 12,000 printed copies of the Smart Chart have been distributed to nonprofits in the U.S. and abroad, and thousands more have been downloaded from the Web site. The chart is also available in Spanish.

To increase access to the tool, CLI has also created an interactive version of the Smart Chart. Receiving nearly 2,000 visitors each month, the online tool allows users to finish the planning process in their own time – and offers maximum flexibility so users can get input from staff, board members or other resources as needed. When the process is finished, users can print a completed chart, save it to their computer and modify it as they move forward with their communications efforts.
